FORMER Rossendale Town Crier Ian Garside developed a cushion to ease his own sciatic pain and is now hoping to see the invention take off.
He was returning from visiting Lancashire to his new home of Ibstock in Leicestershire when he began suffering from sciatic pain.
Ian, a sports and massage therapist, then designed and made a specially-shaped cushion to relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve and it worked, but not just for him for 94 per cent of the people with back pain who have since tried it.
The former chief instructor with Rossendale Shotokan Karate Club, who until two years ago lived in Weir, will be launching the product at his trade stand at The Back Pain Show in Birmingham on Friday (May 19).
Ian has formed a company, IGMD Ltd, with two colleagues Mark Dunwell and Jo Milnes who have specialist knowledge in the manufacture of cushions and mattresses for the NHS and other health care providers.
Ian said: “We will be using the show to launch a crowdfunding bid. The feedback from people who have participated in trialing the cushion was extremely encouraging. It has helped us refine the design of the cushion.
“The final design, materials and shape meet both the requirements of a Class 1 medical device and the needs of people who are suffering with sciatica. “The design makes the cushion easy to use in any situation where being seated is essential whether driving, sitting at a desk or eating meals with family and friends.”
The design has now been registered in Europe and in the USA design registration is pending. There has already been interest from massage and manipulative therapists in the UK and from physiotherapists in the USA.
Ian, who was born and brought up in Rochdale, still returns to Rossendale every year to be the town crier at Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival and will be shouting about this year’s event on Sunday June 25.
He is a former member of Bacup Consortium Trust and before retraining as a sports therapist and setting up Healing Hands of Rossendale worked for BA Systems in Chadderton and Samlesbury.
