COMPLEX structural alterations to a warehouse were carried out by a Rossendale company without any disruption to the existing business. Rawtenstall-based Civenco – a civil engineering and construction business – is run by long standing friends Carl Harrison and John Pollard. Specialist textile manufacturer James Dewhurst, in Altham, announced plans to install a new weaving machine and chose Clitheroe-based Harrisons Engineering Ltd to provide the equipment. Harrisons is a client of Civenco, and so recommended the Rossendale company to tender for the work to prepare the warehouse.
John said: “When we were approached, we had a drawing of the machine to work from and a location within the building. From this we had to engage structural engineers to provide drawings and calculations for the removal of the existing concrete floor, the installation of new foundations and then the replacement of the concrete floor. The works involved cutting the existing floor slab, excavating the floor then removing in excess of 60 tonnes of spoil. New concrete footings were then installed to support the metal machine base.”
While all the structural works were being carried out, there was no disruption to the rest of the factory. John said: “From submitting our original design to completion of the works was just six weeks. We had a three-week programme on site but we finished early and now Harrison’s Engineering are installing the new machinery. The client was so pleased with our standard of work that this contract has already led to Civenco being asked to carry out works of a similar nature almost immediately afterwards.”
Carl and John met when their children attended the same nursery school almost 12 years ago and both initially worked as joiners before specialising in the civil engineering and construction industries. Commercial Director John and Operations Director Carl have around 50 years experience working for different companies and all over the country. They decided to join forces in October 2017 to get the work/life balance right and set up Civenco, based in the Kingfisher Business Centre.
The company offers a full design and build service and has worked on projects large and small from a loft conversion and a house extension to Network Rail’s infrastructure.
