Whitworth stretches three-a-half miles along the valley bottom from Shawforth to Healey corner and it is home to some 7,500 residents.
Along the main road, there is a stream of shops, everything from butchers to a petfood business; hardware to groceries; several pubs; cafes and takeaways.
It is the only area in Rossendale to have a town council, paid for by an additional precept on the council tax.
Cowm Leisure offers outdoor sports including waterskiing. In the former quarry on the hill, there is motocross and the town’s sports and leisure complex is run by the Community Leisure Association of Whitworth.
As you head towards Rochdale stop off and admire the picturesque Healey DellNature Reserve.
